Michael
Bloomberg is the 108th Mayor of the City of New York (Big Apple),
and also the world’s richest mayor. He
is a man of outstanding resume: a philanthropist, mayor, business mogul, and
billionaire. Born in 1942 Boston, Bloomberg was raised in a middle class home
in Medford, Massachusetts. He excelled in his studies, where he demonstrated an
interest in technology. This led to him pursuing a degree in engineering in
Johns Hopkins University, where he paid his tuition by taking loans and working
as a parking lot attendant. After which, Bloomberg went on to receive an MBA
from Harvard Business School. Armed with impressive education, he went to work
at Wall Street firm Salomon Brothers (An investment bank).
Bloomberg
quickly advanced through the ranks and became a partner of the Salomon
Brothers, where he oversaw equity trading and sales before heading towards
information systems. Nine years later, he was dismissed from the firm after
another company took over the Salomon Brothers. With a vision of an information
company that would use technological development to bring transparency and
efficiency to buyers and sellers of financial securities, Bloomberg cashed out
a stake worth $10 million from his previous job and launched a small start-up
company known as Bloomberg L.P.
Decades after
the formation of Bloomberg L.P. Bloomberg threw himself into philanthropy,
displaying regard for the improvement of education and medical research. He
donated his time and resources to many different social causes, sitting on the
boards of numerous charitable, cultural, and educational institutions.
Bloomberg financed programs for domestic violence victims, the homeless, and
high school education. Among the board of the dozen institutions he sat on
included: the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, and John Hopkins University.
Bloomberg
entered the race for Mayor of the City of New York in 2001, and was elected as
mayor in the aftermath of the 9/11 incident. This was a time when many believed
that crime would return, that businesses would flee, and that irreparable
damage will be done to New York as a whole. Instead, through plentiful
innovative new policies and initiatives, Bloomberg has made New York City a
safer, stronger, and greener place, fulfilling his role as Big Apple’s Mayor.
