Mayor Bloomberg
won control of New York City’s broken public school system and transformed it
by raising standards, promoting innovation, and holding schools accountable for
successes. He guided the city through financial crises and spurred economic
growth and job creation by strengthening key industries, including new media,
film and television, bio-science, technology, and higher education.
His social
efforts included: restrictions to smoking, encouragements of bicycle use, and
pedestrian access. Bloomberg helped avoided level of job losses that many
experts had forecasted through The
Mayor’s Five Borough Economic Opportunity Plan, and launched programs that
encouraged entrepreneurship, combatted poverty, and helped people acquire the
skills they needed to build careers. His belief that America’s mayors and
business leaders can help effect change in Washington has led him to launch
coalitions to combat illegal guns, reform immigration, and invest in
infrastructures.
